Inflation Creates a Summer Travel Divide as Fewer Americans Plan Vacations

New survey data from Deloitte suggests that Americans are pulling back on summer travel plans at the highest rate in six years, with only 45% reporting they have trips planned. Rising everyday expenses and higher airfare costs are hitting lower- and middle-income households particularly hard, leading many travelers to delay bookings, search for bargains, or choose destinations closer to home.

International travel is also feeling the impact, with outbound summer bookings down significantly compared to last year. Meanwhile, affluent travelers continue to spend on premium flights and luxury accommodations, helping airlines and hotel brands maintain strong revenues despite a broader slowdown in travel demand. The result is a growing split in the travel market between those cutting back and those continuing to travel at higher spending levels.

American Airlines Bringing Starlink Wi-Fi to More Than 500 Aircraft

American Airlines announced plans to install Starlink Wi-Fi on more than 500 narrowbody aircraft beginning in early 2027, including its new Airbus A321XLR and A321neo fleet. The upgrade is expected to provide significantly faster and more reliable internet service, allowing passengers to stream video, browse, work, game, and communicate in real time during flights. For travelers, the move signals a major improvement in the onboard experience, especially on domestic and short-haul international routes where staying connected has become an increasingly important part of the journey.

Mexico Leads North America in Tourism Growth Ahead of World Cup Summer

Mexico is emerging as North America’s standout travel performer, with travel and tourism GDP growing 1.8 percent in 2025, ahead of the U.S. and Canada, according to WTTC’s 2026 Economic Impact Research. International arrivals to Mexico rose 6.1 percent, while visitor spending climbed 3.5 percent, signaling strong global interest in the destination. With the FIFA World Cup set to take place across Mexico, the U.S., and Canada in 2026, travelers can expect increased attention on North American destinations, expanded tourism activity, and a major spotlight on Mexico’s growing appeal.

FAA Proposes $165,000 Fine Against Alaska Airlines Over Intoxicated Passengers

Fodors reports that the FAA has proposed a $165,000 penalty against Alaska Airlines, alleging the carrier allowed visibly intoxicated passengers to board 11 flights between February 2024 and February 2025. Federal regulations require airlines to prevent intoxicated travelers from boarding and to stop serving alcohol to passengers who appear impaired during a flight. The case highlights the aviation industry's ongoing focus on passenger safety and disruptive behavior, reminding travelers that airlines are paying close attention to alcohol-related incidents both at the gate and in the cabin.

Yosemite National Park Expands Fishing Access with Year-Round Season

Yosemite National Park has announced that fishing in Yosemite Valley is now available year-round, eliminating the seasonal winter closures that previously limited access for anglers. The change aligns park regulations more closely with California fishing rules and expands recreational opportunities in popular areas, including the remote but accessible Hetch Hetchy region.

While visitors can now enjoy greater flexibility when planning fishing trips, important conservation measures remain in effect, including catch-and-release requirements for rainbow trout in certain waters and the use of artificial lures with barbless hooks. For anglers, the update means more opportunities to experience Yosemite’s iconic landscapes throughout the year while helping protect the park’s native fish populations.

American Cruise Lines Launches First Great Lakes Season

American Cruise Lines has officially begun its inaugural Great Lakes season, with the 130-passenger American Patriot sailing from Oswego, New York, to Buffalo. Running through August, the new nine- and 14-day itineraries visit only U.S. ports, offering travelers a domestic cruise experience across one of North America’s most scenic freshwater regions. The launch reflects growing guest demand, and fares include a pre-cruise hotel stay, with some sailings also including domestic airfare.

Tagged for Trouble: Airport Baggage Scam Raises New Concerns for Canadian Travellers

A new investigation by W5 has uncovered allegations that organized crime groups may be exploiting airport baggage systems by switching luggage tags from legitimate travelers onto suitcases containing drugs. According to the report, at least 17 passengers departing from Canada were detained, questioned, or jailed overseas after authorities discovered narcotics in bags bearing their names.

The investigation also highlighted concerns about insider access and security vulnerabilities at Toronto Pearson International Airport. While such incidents remain rare, the story serves as an important reminder for travelers to document their luggage, keep baggage receipts, and consider using tracking devices to help protect themselves when flying internationally.

Holland America Expands to Year-Round Europe Cruises Beginning in 2027

Holland America Line is extending its Europe cruise season into the winter for the first time, keeping the Nieuw Statendam in the region year-round starting in late 2027. The expanded program features a dozen itineraries across the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Baltic, and the Canary Islands, adding more than 70 extra port days compared to previous seasons.

Travel Advisory Update

Mexico - Level 2 - Exercie Increased Caution

The U.S. Department of State has updated its travel advisory for Mexico, urging travelers to be aware that safety conditions vary significantly across the country.

While popular destinations such as Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Oaxaca, and the Yucatán Peninsula remain accessible with lower advisory levels, several states continue to carry “Do Not Travel” or “Reconsider Travel” warnings due to crime, kidnapping, and organized criminal activity.

With international attention turning toward Mexico ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, travelers are encouraged to review state-specific guidance, use reputable transportation services, avoid nighttime intercity travel, and stay informed through official travel alerts.
